HC discharges rules over bail pleas of Enu, Rupon
DHAKA, Oct 21, 2020 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today discharged two rules it had earlier issued, asking as to why the court shall not allow bail to suspended leaders of Gendaria Thana Awami League Enamul Huq Enu and his brother Rupun Bhuiyan in two graft cases.
A High Court division virtual bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Ahmed Sohel passed the order after holding hearing on the rules issued on September 15.
Attorney General AM Amin Uddin and Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik stood for the state, while Khurshid Alam Khan argued for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Advocate Syed Mamun Mahbub moved the bail pleas for the accused.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge KM Imrul Qayesh on June 15 scrapped bail pleas of the two brothers, allegedly the kingpins of casino business in the country. Enu and Rupon filed pleas with the High Court, challenging the order of the lower court.
The High Court after holding hearing on their appeals, issued separate rules, asking the authorities concerned to explain in two weeks as to why it shall not allow bail to the brothers.
Enu and Rupon were arrested from Keraniganj on January 13, 2020, as they were planning to flee to Nepal via India by using passports made with false names.
According to the CID, the brothers were among the people who introduced casino business in Bangladesh. They used to bring casino materials from Nepal and supplied those to buyers here across the country.
They own a total of 22 buildings, plots and 128 flats in the capital and have crores of Taka in different bank accounts.
