Embezzlement of Tk 50 lakh: Former Gazipur mayor Mannan jailed Former mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Professor MA Mannan has been given one year jail sentence in a case involving embezzlement of Tk 50 lakh. Dhaka Divisional Special Judge Syed Kamal Hossain pronounced the verdict on Wednesday. Following the pronouncement of the verdict, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)’s lawyer Mahmud Hossain Jahangir told reporters that the judge fined convict MA Mannan Tk 50 lakh apart from awarding him jail sentence. In default, he will also have to face more three months’ jail sentence. The lawyer said MA Mannan was present at the dock during the pronouncement of judgement. He also submitted a prayer to the court seeking bail. The judge granted him bail on condition that he would appeal against the verdict. Besides, the court acquitted Golam Kibria, another accused, from the charges. It was learnt from the case statement that MA Mannan embezzled Tk 49,01,848 from the Relief and Vulnerable Fund of the GCC showing grants and expenses through 999 fake vouchers between August 18, 2013 and February 2, 2015 when he was the GCC mayor. On June 23, 2016, the ACC deputy director Shamsul Alam filed a case against Mannan and his associate Golam Kibria with Joydevpur Police Station. Later, the ACC submitted chargesheet against Mannan and Kibria to the court on January 12, 2017. SZA |
