Power supply restored to Sylhet after 31 hours – National – observerbd.com

Power supply has been restored to Sylhet district partially almost 31 hours after a fire broke out at the 132/33KV sub-station of Bangladesh Power Grid at Kumargaon in Sylhet sadar upazila on Tuesday morning.

The power supply was restored after 6:15pm on Wednesday partially, said Khandker Mokammel Hossain, additional chief engineer of Power Development Board (PDB) in Sylhet.

He said it was possible to generate and distribute electricity to some power lines through quick services. “Earlier, we had to bring many equipment from Dhaka, and more than 150 officials and employees worked round-the-clock to restore power supply in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts,” he said.

People of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts have expressed a sigh of relief following the restoration of power supply to the electricity lines.

The fire broke out at the 132/33KV power station in Sylhet sadar upazila around 11:00am, snapping the supply. Seven fire engines doused the flames after two hours, said Kobal Ali Sarkar, in-charge of Fire Service and Civil Defence in Sylhet.

Most parts of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts plunged into darkness at night after engineers failed to restore electricity supply from Kumargaon Power Plant.

In the meantime, people in those areas suffered badly. Many took to the social media to vent their anger. Some advised others to store water, apprehending that the electricity supply might not be restored soon.

Khandker Mokammel Hossain said that they suspected some transformers caught fire. “We’re working hard to restore the supply. But it is hard to say when we will be able to fix it,” he said.

He also said the power supply to Sylhet and Sunamganj depends on the power plant. “There is no alternative source of power generation here,” he said
