Tomato appears in Godagari markets



With the advent of winter, tomatoes have started appearing in different local markets in Godagari Upazila of Rajshahi.

Farmers of the area are now busy in taking care of their tomato farms in the last period and selling in the local market.

Sources of Godagari Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said in the current season around 2,000 hectares of land has been cultivated in the upazila. The farmers here mainly have cultivated different varieties of tomato like ‘Nasib’, ‘NL-642’, ‘Slamot-83’, ‘Bongio’, ‘Mintu Super’and ‘Bizli’.

Some farmers of Basantapur village in the upazila said that they have been cultivating tomatoes along with paddy, wheat and other crops for almost two decades. This year tomato cultivation has increased due to its great demand last time. Per maund of green tomatoes is being sold at Tk 1,400 to 1,600 in the wholesale markets.

Afzal Hossain, a tomato farmer of the area said he has been cultivating tomato for 11 years.

“I cultivated tomato on three-bigha of land costing Tk 20,000 per bigha this season. Now I have already started plunking tomatoes from the field and selling in the markets”, he added.
