Another classic intra-Mercedes battle for pole position at the 2020 Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix is the subject of discussion in the latest episode of the Autosport podcast.
After Valtteri Bottas had swept all three practice sessions, Lewis Hamilton denied the Finn with a last-gasp effort in Q3 having elected to go for two timed laps on medium compound tyres, rather than the single lap approach adopted by Bottas.
Bottas later admitted that he should have taken Hamilton’s approach after what he described as a “decent lap, not perfect” left him 0.102s in arrears.
Both will start the race on the medium tyre, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen starting third on softs.
Elsewhere, Charles Leclerc produced a brilliant lap to qualify fourth for Ferrari, while George Russell – under pressure for his Williams seat from free agent Sergio Perez – out-qualified the second Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel after escaping the drop in Q1.
Autosport’s Grand Prix Editor Alex Kalinauckas and F1 Reporter Luke Smith discuss all the key talking points from qualifying and look ahead to today’s race.
