Nation pays homage to martyred intellectuals

The nation is observing the Martyred Intellectuals Day on Monday to commemorate the intellectuals killed systematically by Pakistan occupation forces and their local collaborators at the fag-end of the Liberation War in 1971.

Marking the day, the President and the Prime Minister placed wreaths this morning respectively at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Memorial.

Later, members of the martyrs’ family and the heroic freedom fighters led by the Liberation War Affairs Minister placed wreaths at the Intellectuals Memorial at 7:22 am and Rayer Bazar Boddho Bhumi at 8:00 am.

The day is being observed on a limited scale due to fresh surge of the COVID-19 cases.

People from all walks of life are paying their homage placing wreaths at the Intellectual Memorial.

On this day in 1971, the country’s renowned academicians, doctors,
engineers, journalists, artists, teachers and other eminent
personalities were dragged out of their homes, blindfolded and taken to
unknown places and then brutally tortured and murdered.

Their bodies were later dumped at Rayerbazar, Mirpur and some other killing fields in the capital.

A special discussion will be held on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day highlighting the significance of the day.

Bangladesh Television and private television channels will broadcast special programmes highlighting the significance of the day, reports agencies.
