JS body for placing two fisheries bills before parliament
DHAKA, Oct 11, 2020 (BSS) – The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Fisheries and Livestock Ministry today recommended placing ‘Marine Fisheries Bill, 2020’, and ‘Fisheries and Fisheries Products (Inspection and Quality Control) Bill, 2020’ before the House after necessary scrutiny and amendment.
The parliamentary watchdog came up with the recommendation at its 12th meeting held at the Sangsad Bhaban here with committee chairman Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu in the chair.
Committee members – Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim, BM Kabirul Haque, Choto Monir, Shamima Akther and Kaniz Fatema Ahmed – were present at the meeting, an official press release said.
The meeting was informed that the ministry has taken various initiatives to produce six lakh metric tonnes of fish in the country in the current fiscal and it has decided to ban catching, transporting, marketing and storing of hilsa fish for 22 days from October 14 to November 4 this year aiming to increase the production of the national fish.
The meeting was also informed that the local administrations and the fisheries department have taken measures to distribute rice among 5.7 lakh fisher families during the ban period.
The fisheries and livestock secretary, the chiefs of different agencies under the ministry and officials of the parliament secretariat were present.
