Workers vandalise sweater factory in Gazipur – National – observerbd.com
Workers vandalised a sweater factory in Naojor area of Gazipur city and blockade road for an hour over a conflict with the owner.
Police took control over the situation after removing the workers from the highway.
A number of factories in the area have been shut down to tackle the situation.
Police and workers said workers of ‘Diganta Sweater Factory’ have been demonstrating for last few days against authorities’ decision of retrenchment.
They also held a meeting with the owner on Tuesday in presence of police.
On Wednesday morning, the workers vandalised the factory and put up barricade on Dhaka-Tangail highway around 9am, halting vehicular movement on the route for more than an hour.
At one stage, the agitating workers attacked nearby Coast to Coast Factory.
They damaged the factory’s main gate, machines and computers while threw out some important documents. Besides, 10 vehicles were also vandalised by the unruly workers.
Ten pedestrians received injuries from brick chips thrown by the protesters.
Police said the injured were given first aid in local hospital and clinics.
On information, police rushed in and removed them from the highway.
Later, traffic resumed at 10am.
