Gazipur fire kills 4, injures 20

Gazipur, Jan 11, 2021 (BSS) – At least four people including a woman were killed and 20 others injured in a massive fire incident that originated from gas cylinder explosion at a colony in Kaliakoir in the district early this morning.

The deceased were identified as Munni Begum, 30 of Sandhailpur village of Gaibandha upazila of Gaibandha district, her husband Milon Mia, 40, and their neighbors Farhad Hossen, 38 and Abdul Awal.

“The devastating fire occurred at Kalampur Purbapara colony under Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur at around 5am,” said police and fire service officials.

The fire also engulfed about 50 dwelling houses in the surrounding areas.

“The fire originated from explosion of a gas cylinder at Mohammad Ali’s house in Kalampur area this morning,” said Kabirul Alam, station officer of Kaliakoir Fire Services.

The fire immediately spread to adjacent three neighboring houses during this time, he added.

After receiving information, Alam said three fire units rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.
The injured were admitted to different hospitals and clinics. But the identities of the injured were not known immediately.

The police are ready to file cases on behalf of the deceased family members, said Inspector of Kaliakoir Police Station Rajib Chakrawarty.

The bodies would be sent to their respective village homes after the autopsy.

Meanwhile, Kaliakoir Municipality Mayor Mujibur Rahman visited the spot.

Kailakoir Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kazi Hafizul Amin assured to pay Taka 20,000 to each deceased family on behalf of the district administration. The blanket will also be distributed among 50 fire victims’ family members.
