United, Everton clash in quarter-final tonight

Manchester United take on Everton in the Carabao Cup quarter-final at the Goodison Park on Wednesday.

The Reds beat Everton 3-1 in the league last month and the victors of this tie will progress to the last four, which is due to be played in early January.

After the 6-2 win over Leeds on Sunday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Luke Shaw (illness) and Scott McTominay (groin) were doubts for the game at Goodison Park. Defenders Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones are out until January.

For the home side, summer signings Allan (thigh) and James Rodriguez (calf) will be assessed before the game, having missed the weekend win against Arsenal. First-choice left-back Lucas Digne is a long-term absentee, as are midfielders Fabian Delph and Jean-Philippe Gbamin.

This is United’s third consecutive away tie in this year’s competition. United qualified for the quarter-finals by beating Luton Town and Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0 on the road in September. With Everton not involved in Europe this year, the Toffees have played an extra game to reach the qaurters, beating Salford City 3-0 at Goodison Park before getting past Fleetwood (5-2) on the Lancashire coast and defeating West Ham 4-1, again at home.

The outcome of the match may well rest on whether hugely influential Man Utd midfielder Bruno Fernandes starts for the Red Devils. If he does, then Solskjaer’s side will be favourites to advance, but if he starts on the bench then Everton with home advantage could be set to take advantage. Either way, an exciting contest is expected between two naturally offensive sides, so consider both teams to score here.
