Ulema meet Home Minister over sculpture issue, briefing Tuesday

A group of Islamic scholars on Monday met with Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal at his residence in Dhaka to discuss the ongoing problem centring installation of the sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The group led by Bangladesh Qawmi Madrasa Education Board (Befaq) chairman Maulana Mahmudul Hasan joined the meeting which started at 9.15pm and ended at 10.45pm. Details of the meeting will be disclosed at a briefing at Secretariat on Tuesday.

Home Ministry Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sharif Mahmud Opu said Home Minister will brief media about the meeting outcome tomorrow.

The making of Bangabandhu’s sculpture in the capital has recently stirred up controversies. On December 4, an under-construction sculpture of Bangabandhu was vandalized in Kushtia.

Earlier, on December 5, a group of Islamic scholars sat in a meeting in city’s Jatrabari area with Maulana Mahmudul Hasan in the chair. They presented five-point to resolve the crisis on installation of the sculpture Bangabandhu following the meeting and sought a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to discuss over the issue.

According to source, Prime Minister assigned Home Minsiter for meeting with ulema to discuss the sculpture issue as she does not take part in meeting directly because of Coronavirus pandemic.
