Now, two city corporations to oversee canals in Dhaka

Dhaka North and Dhaka South city corporations will take over the charges of all canals in the capital from the Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) to resolve the water logging problems.

LGRD Minister Tajul Islam disclosed it following a meeting at his office in Dhaka on Thursday.

He said a technical committee has been formed to prepare a report on the working processes of the two city corporations. The committee has been asked the committee to submit the report in this regard within the next 30 days.

Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam, Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Dhaka WASA managing director Taqsem A Khan and LGRD senior secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed were present at the meeting.

Tajul Islam said, “Earlier, the city corporation was responsible for the management, cleaning and maintenance of the drainage systems and canals in the capital. But the responsibility was handed over to the Dhaka WASA following a presidential order.”

He said both the mayors in city corporations are keen to take the responsibilities of the canals and they would be able to discharge their duties once the canals and drainage systems are handed over to them.
