Life sketch of CCC mayor Rezaul at a glance

CHATTOGRAM, Jan 28, 2021 (BSS) – Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, the newly elected
mayor of Chattogram, was born on 31 May, 1953 at East Sholashahar under
Chandgaon police station.

Rezaul Karim Chowdhury’s father Harun-ur-Rashid Chowdhury was a government
official and his grandfather Saleh Ahmed was a renowned lawyer. Rezaul Karim
Chowdhury’s education began at East Sholashahar Primary School under
Chandgaon police station. He passed SSC from Muslim High School and HSC from
Chittagong College.

He then obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Chittagong University and
later got enrolled for law study. But after the assassination of Father of
the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he could not take the final
test as he participated in resistance movement against military rule.

In personal life, he and his wife Selina Akhter are blessed with two
daughters and a son.

He was the editor of monthly Ayut Kantha (1972), after the assassination of
Bangabandhu in 1978, ignoring the military rule and he published magazine
‘Suryapath’. He is also the editor of the fortnightly magazine ‘Barud’. He
also published many books including ‘Jamaat-Shibir Hingratta and Religious
Politics’ (1993), ‘Black Money-Based Sick Politics Must Be Free’ (2014),
‘Chhatra League Chittagong in the Sixties’ (2017) and ‘Homeland Politics and
Home Enemy-Horror’ (2019).

Reazaul Karim Chowdhury joined East Pakistan Chhatra League in 1967. He was
the organizing secretary of the then Chittagong College Chhatra League in
1969-70. He served as Acting General Secretary of the BCL in 1970-71. He also
joined the great Liberation War in 1971. He was the president of Chittagong
College Chhatra League from 1972 to ’76. He was the general secretary of
Chattogram north district unit Chhatra League from 1976 to 1978. Later he
became the convener of Uttar Zila Chhatra League in 1978-79.

From 1997 to 2006 he was the information and research secretary of
Chittagong City unit Awami League. He was the organising secretary of City
Awami League from 2006 to 2014.

He has been serving as the joint general secretary of city Awami League
since 2014.

As part of his social responsibility, he established Shamsun Nahar
Polytechnic Institute and Shamsun Nahar Technical Training Institute in
Chattogram. He is also the President of Chandgaon NMC High School, East
Sholashahar Washia Ahmadiyya Madrasa Managing committee and Badrashahi Jame
Mosque Steering Committee.
