Md Zahid Hossain Musa Mia, an accomplished politician, social activist, and language activist, passed away on Tuesday at a hospital in Dhaka. He was 89.

He died at about 2:45pm at Evercare Hospital while underwent treatment there.

Late Musa Mia’s first namaj-e-janaza was held at Eidgah Mosque in Dhanmondi at about 7:30pm on Tuesday. He will be buried at his family graveyard at village Mohishakundu after his second namaj-e-janaza at Wazir Ali High School ground in Jhenidah after Zohr prayers on Wednesday.

On October 13 last, Md Zahid Hossain Musa Mia was admitted to the hospital with old-age complications. He left behind his wife, six sons, a daughter, grand-daughters and grandsons.

His eldest son Md Naser Shahriar Zahedi is the chairman of Radiant Group.

Meanwhile, different political leaders and administration officials have expressed profound shock at the death of Musa Mia. They also conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Language activist Zahid Hossain Musa Mia was the honorary adviser of Radiant Group of Companies and the Weekly Samprotik Deshkal.

Musa Mia was born on February 2, 1932 at his maternal grandfather’s house at village Paikpara in Kaliganj under Jhenidah sub-division (now district) of Jessore district. Though he was born in the erstwhile British-India, he lived lifelong in Jhenidah. A political companion of Moulana Bhasani, he passed a long period of his life in Dhaka and Kolkata.

At the beginning of the Bangladesh War of Liberation, many political leaders went to his ancestral home at Jhenidah and Narikelbaria and stayed there. Moulana Bhasani and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman also stayed at his house several times during their visits to Jhenidah.

Musa Mia was an active organiser at the then Jhenidah sub-division and Jessore district during the Language Movement from 1948 to 1952. Later, he got associated with active politics and worked as Jhenidah Sub-Division Awami League general secretary from 1955 to 1957.

He took part in the parliament election as a candidate in 1973 at the directive of Moulana Bhasani when he was Jhenidah Sub-Division NAP president.

Musa Mia also composed a number of songs and poems. He also wrote a book, “Onek Derite.”

It may be mentioned that Zahedi Foundation, a social welfare organisation, was formed under the leadership of Zahid Hossain Musa in 2009.
