COVID-19 cases rise to 14,445 in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, Dec 6, 2020 (BSS) – The number of coronavirus (COVID-19) positive cases have risen to 14,445 today in Rangpur division where the daily infection rate continues showing a rising trend during the second wave in recent weeks.

Health officials said 45 new patients were reported coronavirus positive after testing 326 samples at the two COVID-19 Laboratories in the division on Saturday, raising the total number of positive cases to 14,445 as the daily infection rate is 15.16 percent.

The district-wise break up of the 14,445 patients stands at 3,678 in Rangpur, 741 in Panchagarh, 1,248 in Nilphamari, 935 in Lalmonirhat, 975 in Kurigram, 1,396 in Thakurgaon, 4,114 in Dinajpur and 1,358 in Gaibandha districts of the division.

Since the beginning, a total of 88,381 collected samples were tested till Saturday, and of them, 14,445 were found COVID-19 positive with an average infection rate of 16.34 percent in the division.

“Meanwhile, the number of healed patients rose to 13,059 as 15 more people were cured on Saturday. The average recovery rate stands at 90.40 percent,” Focal Person of COVID-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr. ZA Siddiqui told BSS today.

The average recovery rate of 90.40 percent is currently over 5.53 times higher than the average infection rate of 16.34 percent in the division, Dr. Siddiqui added.

The 13,059 recovered patients include 3,049 of Rangpur, 701 of Panchagarh, 1,178 of Nilphamari, 898 of Lalmonirhat, 928 of Kurigram, 1,196 of Thakurgaon, 3,830 of Dinajpur and 1,279 of Gaibandha districts.

Talking to BSS, Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Md. Ahad Ali said the number of total fatalities rose to 270 in the division with two more deaths reported from Dinajpur on Saturday.

“The district-wise break up of the 270 fatalities stands at 61 in Rangpur, 96 in Dinajpur, 30 in Thakurgaon, 23 in Nilphamari, 15 in Kurigram, 15 in Gaibandha, 20 in Panchagarh and 10 in Lalmonirhat districts of the division,” he said.

The average casualty rate currently stands at about 1.87 percent in the division.

“Among the total 14,445 COVID-19 patients, 69 are undergoing treatments at isolation units of different hospitals after recovery of 13,059 patients and 270 deaths while 941 remaining in home isolations across the division,” Dr. Ali said.

Since the beginning, a total of 89,589 people of the division were put in quarantine, and of them, 83,930 were released and 5,659 are currently remaining in home or institutional quarantines, sources said.

Chief of Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr. AKM Nurunnabi Lyzu told BSS that the COVID-19 spread is showing a rising trend in recent weeks in the division.

“Common people should wear masks while remaining outside to remain safe during the current second wave of the deadly virus spread as the virus is presently also floating in the air due to dry weather amid less humidity in the winter,” Dr. Lyzu added.
