Election at 24 municipalities under the first phase began on Monday morning.
Voting started at 8am and will continue till 4pm.
The municipalities are: Panchagarh, Pirganj in Thakurgaon, Fulbari in Dinajpur, Badarganj in Rangpur, Kurigram, Puthia and Katakhali in Rajshahi, Shajadpur in Sirajganj, Chatmohor in Pabna, Khoksha in Kushtia, Chuadanga, Chalna in Khulna, Betagi in Barguna, Kuakata in Patuakhali, Ujirpur and Bakerganj in Barishal, Gafargaon in Mymensingh, Madan in Netrokona, Manikganj, Dhamrai in Dhaka, Dirai in Sunamganj, Borolekha in Moulvibazar, Shayestaganj in Habiganj, and Sitakundu in Chattogram.
Awami League, BNP, Jatiya Party, Islami Andolon Bangladesh and Jatiya Ganatantrik Party candidates are contesting in the mayoral posts under the first phase of the election.
Besides, independent candidates are contesting the polls.
A total of 93 candidates are vying for mayoral posts at 24 municipalities, while 277 candidates for reserved seats of councilors and 848 for general councilors are contesting the election.
