1,500 Rohingyas to be relocated in Basanchar Tuesday – National – observerbd.com
About 1,500 Rohingyas will be relocated tomorrow in Basanchar in the second phase. Despite plans to relocate 700 Rohingyas in the second phase, about 1,500 Rohingyas have already voluntarily left Cox’s Bazar for Chattogram under the government management, according to sources at the Prime Minister’s Office, BSS reports. They will leave Chattogram tomorrow for Bhasanchar by a Bangladesh Navy ship, the PMO sources said. In the first phase, on December 4 last, 1,642 Rohingyas were relocated to Bhasanchar. Bangladesh is hosting more than 1.1 million Rohingyas, most of whom came here from their homeland in Myanmar starting in Aug 2017. Bangladesh has been urging the global community to mount pressure on Myanmar for effective repatriation of the Rohingyas. The government plans to shift some 100,000 Rohingyas to Bhasan Char in phases to provide them a better living place. Located 34 kilometers from the mainland, the island surfaced 20 years ago and was never inhabited. Contractors say its infrastructure is like a modern township, with multifamily concrete homes, schools, playgrounds and roads. It also has solar-power facilities, a water supply system and cyclone shelters. GY |
