Eight dead, 10 injured in Habiganj road crash – Countryside – observerbd.com
At least eight people died and 10 others were injured as a bus hits two CNG-run auto rickshaws at Nabiganj upazila in Habiganj district on Monday late afternoon. The deceased were identified as Samirun Begum, 28, wife of Abu Taher, their two-year-old daughter Maria Begum, and Halima Begum, 25, residents of Muraura village of Nabiganj upazila; Antar Mia, 22, son of Nur Islam, Liza Akter, 19, and Liton Mia, 18, of Satail village; Kitab Ali, 30, of Latibpur village in Debpara union and an unidentified man, aged around 26. Witnesses said a Sylhet-bound BRTC bus smashed the auto-rickshaws in Phultoli Bazar on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway around 4:45 pm, leaving eight dead on the spot and 10 others injured. Being informed, two units of Fire Service and Civil Defence and police went there and rushed the injured to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Sherpur highway Police Station Ershahdul Haque Bhuiyan confirmed the matter. Locals said a BRTC bus collided head-on with a Paniumda-bound auto rickshaw and then hit another auto rickshaw before falling into a roadside ditch. Eight people, including drivers of the autorickshaws, were killed on the spot. Locals joined police and firefighters in the rescue. Traffic on the busy road remained halted for about an hour. The cause of the accident was not immediately clear. It was also unclear if anyone had been arrested over the accident or a case was filed. AAL/ALM |
