Bera Municipality mayor Md Abdul Baten in Pabna district has been suspended for physically assaulting the Bera upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Asif Anam Siddique.

The Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives issued a gazette notification on Tuesday carrying out the suspension order under the Local Government Act 2009.

The notification reads that Md Baten physically assaulted the Bera UNO, hurled abusive language at him and threatened him during a monthly meeting on October 11 at the upazila parishad conference room.

Later, Pabna deputy commissioner submitted an investigation report over the incident that followed the Local Government Ministry action on Tuesday.

The indecent behaviour and misuse of power by the municipality mayor is tantamount to the crime demanding suspension under the law, the notification explained.
