Autosport’s Moment of the Year Award nominees revealed – Autosport Awards

Voting has now opened for Autosport’s Moment of the Year Award, as the 2020 nominees are revealed.

The 2020 edition of the Autosport Awards will be online, with increased digital coverage, and will continue the tradition of celebrating the best of the motorsport season.

Autosport.com subscribers and magazine readers are able to vote for the best nominee in each category. The winners will be announced in December, again across multiple digital platforms, as well as Autosport magazine, which is celebrating its 70th birthday in 2020.

The Moment Award is open to any standout moment from international-level motorsport. Last year’s winner was Jean-Eric Vergne becoming Formula E’s first double champion.

Binder takes KTM’s first MotoGP victory
The 2020 MotoGP season was full of shocks, and any number of moments could easily take this spot. But rookie Brad Binder’s sensational run to a maiden victory in just his third race in the Czech Grand Prix is our pick. KTM’s maiden victory also proved how competitive modern MotoGP is.

Despite being overlooked for a Formula 1 drive and then landing in backmarker Formula E machinery five years ago, when Antonio Felix da Costa crushed his electric rivals after the coronavirus break in Berlin, he took the time to thank everyone who had played a part in shaping his career. Emotion ran high and few could begrudge the ‘nice guy’ finishing first.

Gasly and AlphaTauri win dramatic Italian GP
Modern Formula 1 teams and cars are so reliable that shock results are now few and far between. But problems, notably Lewis Hamilton picking up a penalty for coming in when the pitlane was closed, gave Pierre Gasly an opportunity he took brilliantly at Monza. It was the first win outside the ‘big three’ teams since 2013.

Hamilton breaks Schumacher’s record in Portugal
Lewis Hamilton has been closing in on Michael Schumacher’s various F1 records in recent years and in the first Portuguese Grand Prix since 1996 he took one of the most important. Hamilton’s 26-second victory over Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas was the Briton’s 92nd F1 win, breaking the record set by Schumacher in 2006.
